How to encourage private investment in R&D

The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) commissioned Economic Insight to investigate the relationship between public and private investment in R&D.

Our final report for BIS answered three key questions: (i) What is the ratio of public to private investment in R&D?, (ii) How much private investment is caused by public investment?, and (iii) What can be done to increase the amount of private sector investment?.

In our second of our latest Insights: How to encourage private investment in R&D we focus on the second question and detail our findings, specifically that of a crowding-in effect, and ask what this means from a policy perspective.
