The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills hired Economic Insight to uncover the drivers of competitive advantage in UK universities.  Our report, based on in-depth interviews with the top researchers in the UK, shows that there are many subtle determinants of research excellence.

They include everything from knowing when to encourage academics to persevere in pursuing a research idea versus encouraging a re-think, to providing the right opportunities for development for early and middle career researchers.
